From Jail to Freedom Park: Revisiting an excruciating and exhilarating experience in my life
I have been traveling constantly these days. Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh; 15 February), Madanapally (Andhra Pradesh; 27 February) and Bidar (Karnataka; 28 February) were, respectively, the places where I addressed my 31th, 32st and 33rd Vijay Sankalp Rallies. My party asked me to tour the entire country as a part of its mass contact programme, prior to the formal election campaign, and organized my first Vijay Sankalp Rally in Jabalpur in February 2008. These rallies have taken me to practically every part of the country, from Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh to Calicut (Kozhikode) in Kerala, and from Dumka in Jharkhand to Vashim in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra.
In the last week alone, I have traveled to Gandhinagar in Gujarat, which is my own Lok Sabha constituency; to Mumbai, where my party workers donated to me a purse of Rs. 11.11 crore, collected from nearly 50,000 donors, towards the election fund; to Bangalore, where I addressed an anti-terrorism rally of over one lakh students, and to Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh where I participated in a large rally organized by the Scheduled Castes Morcha of the BJP.
Although every event gave me deep satisfaction, there was one that brought alive many precious and deeply cherished memories associated with a defining period not only in my personal life but also in the life of India. It was when I was invited by the Government of Karnataka to inaugurate the Freedom Park in Bangalore on 27th February. This is where Bangalore Central Jail was located until recently; the jail has now been shifted to another place on the outskirts of the city. And this is the prison where I spent almost the entire period of 19 months during the Emergency (from June 1977 to January 1979). Rohtak in Haryana was the other place where I was imprisoned for a few weeks during the Emergency.

With B.S. Yeddyurappa, Chief Minister of Karnataka; Ananth Kumar, MP and BJP general secretary, and others at the inauguration of the Freedom Park on 28th February, 2009
Lucky and blessed
One must be truly lucky and blessed by the Almighty to be in the same place in two contrasting roles at two different points in one’s life - first as a political prisoner in a jail and then to be called upon to inaugurate the same jail transformed into Freedom Park. It was a moment that touched a chord deep within me. I can’t forget those most excruciating 19 months. Just as I can’t forget the most exhilarating victory of democracy, under the leadership of the venerable Jayaprakash Narayan, that followed the end of the Emergency.

With two former CMs of Karnataka, Ramakrishna Hegde and J.H. Patel, in front
It is here that I, along with Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Madhu Dandavate, HD Deve Gowda, J.H. Patel, Ramakrishna Hegde and many others were imprisoned. JP, other stalwarts of the opposition such as Moraraji Desai and Chandra Shekhar, and tens of thousands of intrepid anti-Emergency fighters were lodged in jails across the country. As I have stated in my autobiography My Country My Life, democracy itself was imprisoned by the Congress government headed by Smt. Indira Gandhi, who had declared that “the nation was more important than democracy”. The entire network of mass media, including the all-pervasive All India Radio (AIR), was harnessed with the primary objective of brainwashing people into believing that liberty, civil rights, press freedom and judicial independence were all elitist concepts which had nothing to do with the common man’s welfare and that the nation should show gratitude to the Congress government for the Emergency transformation wrought by it.

An illustration from my autobiography 'My Country My Life'
A walk down memory lane
After cutting the ceremonial ribbon to declare the Freedom Park open, my walk in what were previously jail premises turned into a walk down memory lane. I remembered the truly epic legal battles that were fought in defence of the sanctity of the Indian Constitution, which was badly mauled by Indira Gandhi’s government. (The government not only destroyed the basic structure of the Constitution but even postponed the Lok Sabha elections by a year.) Deep gratitude and admiration welled up in my mind for the legal and judicial luminaries - Nani Palkhiwala, Mohammed Currim Chagla, H.R. Khanna, K.S. Hegde, V.R. Krishna Iyer and others - who refused to bend before the arrogant abusers of law. With similar admiration I remembered the courageous journalists - Kuldip Nayar, Nikhil Chakravartty, Raj Thapar, Shankar of Shankar’s Weekly, and Abu Abraham, one of India’s greatest political cartoonists - and also newspaper owners like Ramnath Goenka who made their profession proud by holding aloft the torch of press freedom.
Cover of my book 'A Prisoner's Scrapbook', written from inside the Bangalore Central Jail during the Emergency
I remembered the bravery of countless underground activists of the RSS and the Lok Sangharsh Samiti formed by JP, who produced and circulated anti-Emergency literature clandestinely throughout the country. I remembered the many books I read in the jail’s surprisingly well-stocked library - amongst them William Shirer’s classic The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, a definitive and widely acclaimed account of Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler. I had used this book as a reference point for the booklet titled A Tale of Two Emergencies, which I wrote as my own humble contribution to the underground pro-democracy literature. This and four other underground essays in defence of democracy I wrote in Bangalore jail subsequently became part of my book A Prisoner’s Scrapbook, which was published after the Emergency was lifted.
I also remembered some lighter moments of jail life. We were housed in two large-sized rooms facing each other. Shyamnandan Mishra and Dandavate occupied one of the rooms and Atalji and I shared the other. The jail authorities gave us utensils, crockery, foodstuff-cereals and vegetables-in accordance with the specifications laid down in the prison manual. Atalji volunteered to supervise the cooking. You will see that the Lok Sabha Who’s Who lists ‘cooking’ among his hobbies. The food he cooked was simple but wholesome.
What did I miss the most during that long stay in jail? My family. My children, Jayant and Pratibha, were young and the burden of running the family in Delhi, with meager resources, was entirely borne by my wife Kamla.
‘They can steal your freedom, but can’t take away your hope’
I entered the jail on the morning of 26 January 1977. I was released on 18 January 1977. The entry in my diary on that day recorded something which is still etched in my mind. After being informed by the jailer that I was going to be released, when I returned to my room for the last time, “I found a heap of letters lying on my table. They are more than 600, all of them from abroad, sent by members or associates of Amnesty International. Most of them are Christmas or New Year greeting cards, but there is a line or two inscribed on each, which gave strength, confidence and hope to all of us engaged in the struggle. Here is a sample-a Christmas greeting from one Laurie Hendricks from Amsterdam. She wrote:
Freedom and hope don’t go hand in hand.
They can steal your freedom, but can’t take away your hope.
Yes, they stole the freedom of 600 millions, but they just could not destroy their hope!”
The sad saga of the Emergency ended with the thrilling triumph of democracy, when the people effected a neat ballot-box coup. An electoral massacre of the Congress party took place, and a government of the Janata Party, headed by Morarji Desai, was installed in New Delhi. I am proud that I could play a role in this transformation. As Minister of Information & Broadcasting in that government, it was principally my task to dismantle the elaborate and legally sanctified edifice of a shackled press, which was one of the most hated aspects of the Emergency.

Front view of the Freedom Park in Bangalore
I congratulate Karnataka’s Chief Minister Shri B.S. Yeddyurappa and the Bangalore Municipal Corporation for converting the 21-acre Central Jail premises into a memorial honouring the crusaders for Indian independence and the Defenders of Democracy. I would like it to become one of the major tourist attractions of Bangalore, a place of pilgrimage for all lovers of freedom, democracy, independence of the judiciary and the media, and civil liberties. And also a place that serves as a permanent warning to those who might harbour the evil thoughts of bringing India yet again under the jackboots of authoritarian rule.

This post might not be an Extraordinary Narrative work but tells the fact that we are not living in democracy. After 62 years of freedom we are in a pseudo-X system and fighting for democracy. What is that X stands for? There are some post freedom dynasty (pseudo, wearing democracy Hat) , some mafia regime and some communist. None of these political ideologies have been developed in India to address India’s issues. Sometimes mixture of different ideologies makes poison instead of exploiting the best of each. Believing in dynasty is the problem with slavery that we have already had plate-full in British or pre-British era
Now changing the mindset is dependent on time and knowledge.Turning a jail into a free park?? It is definitely not a vengeance but may be Righteous. Though vengeance is not welcomed but justice can be only achieved by it.

Respected Sir,
We understand how much difficult it will be for u to spare even few minutes for this blog given the huge responsibility that lies on your shoulders. We pray to almighty to give you strength required for fulfilling the dream of millions and millions of this country, who want to see u in PMs chair. India is at a very cruicial stage of its history and todays events are definitely going to write a destiny for this country. Go in for the electoral battle in full swing with a postive mind, an undercurrent of change has already been set in motion.

Dear Advaniji,
Namaskar. I salute you for resisting the dictatorial Congress regime in the seventies. I read your autobiography and your lucid words brought alive the dark days of the emergency to my generation - that was born in the eighties.
We, the people of India, will never forget that the only time in India’s independent era when India was a dictatorship was during the Congress regime’s draconian Emergency years.
We promise that we will Never Forgive and Never Forget that the Congress has always been anti-democratic.
Sir, we need a “Friends of BJP” organisation in every nook and corner of India. How can I start one in Bangalore, where I currently live?
March 2nd, 2009 at 9:32 pm
Dear Advaniji,
A little-known fact that the BJP must highlight everywhere:
80% of all activists who were arrested & jailed (for resisting the Emergency) were Sangh Parivar activists - Jan Sangh (predecessor of BJP), RSS, ABVP etc. The numbers of these unsung heroes were in Lakhs.
Many of those arrested, including then-ABVP activist and now BJP leader in Bihar, Ashwini Kumar Choubey, were tortured and beaten very brutally in jail by the Congress regime.
While the BJP has made so many sacrifices to save India’s Democracy, the Congress can only be labelled “Demon-crazy” !
March 2nd, 2009 at 10:18 pm
Dear Advani ji,
Please continue to highlight the following brilliant, novel contributions of BJP-NDA Govt (under Atalji as PM) in your speeches, website and blogs.
These two BJP contributions very well will resonate with the common man (urban voters, rural farmers, youth and women), whereas the Congress-UPA needs to be taken to task for either stopping or delaying these projects after they came to power in 2004:
1) The River-Interlinking Project to create a National Water Grid:
- This was a visionary, brilliant project to interlink all rivers in India to solve the eternal problem of nature. Ex: “Floods in Assam while a severe drought rages in Rajasthan”.
- This would lead to many states releasing excess water (during floods and heavy monsoon rains) to other states that need them.
- This would solve the problems of flood damage and help not only farmers, but also alleviate the drinking water problem for millions of households. Housewives will thank BJP for this.
March 2nd, 2009 at 10:20 pm
2) “The Golden Quadrilateral” project with highways interlinking cities and villages in the North, South, East and West of India:
National Geographic magazine has lauded this BJP/NDA contribution to India. Please highlight these two NGM links below with this 12-page article, Photo-gallery, Videos on the “The Golden Quadrilateral” project:
http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2008/10/india-highway/belt-text/1
http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/geopedia/India_Highway#India%26%2339%3Bs%20Golden%20Quadrilateral
What the Congress couldn’t achieve in nearly 60 years, the BJP achieved in just 6 years.
This shows that the BJP has the will and determination for development, not just empty slogans like “Garibi Hatao”.
March 2nd, 2009 at 10:32 pm
Dear Mr. Advani Ji !!
With all due respect, If BJP has to be successful as political party or to successfully win this election this time around, it should not beat around the bush on the misgivings of the UPA government. But instead focus on what your party will do, if it is elected to power.
We are as public have not seen as to what you party or your government is going to do !! Objective based Year by Year Plan !! Do you have One !! Even now with Election dates being announced, we are yet to see one. This shows that your distant from reality. I have read thru you blog. I was saddened that you appreciated the CM of Karnataka for converting a jail into meusum. Is it essential at this point in time. As a leader, I would have clobbered the chief minister for having allowed such a thing to happen in his state as to what we saw in Mangalore. Lets get real. Address real issues of people !!!.
March 2nd, 2009 at 11:03 pm
Dear Advaniji,
Thnx for writing the article, your article clearly tell us that the struggle for the real independece continued after 1947 and also it still needs to be gained from the DYANSTIC AND PARTIAL political parties. While most of the leaders who fought against the EMERGENCY are no more with us ,some have retired ,while DEVEGOWDA is busy with family affairs,it becomes all the most important that the mantle to FIGHT to keep the democracy alive lies with you and you would succeed in the fight.
The continuance of NAVEEN CHAWLA should be treated as a grave threat to democracy, while the CONGRESS does not learn any lessons from its continued failure to weaken the democratic forces, the NDA should show the UPA its place in INDIAN DEMOCRACY,i would consider this decision of congress as positive sign because ,the INDIAN youth have storng respect and fondness for democarcy…….ALL THE BEST…..

Your comments on mangalore attack which came in very late was very disappointing, the goons are roaming freely why there is no action against them, they were all out on the bail next day. Please note we are very disappointed with the current karnataka CM and i have no comments on the home minister
March 3rd, 2009 at 12:11 pm
Sir:
I am a staunch supporter of BJP in many fronts
My request :
1.Please give seats to Matryr families of 26/11 - Atleast that will give confidence to us
since we beleive BJP is the only party who is highly partiotic in nature
2.Please give seat (if possible) to Mrs : Purohit - Sir there was no one to help her in her bad times. Even if he is wrong we can see BSP giving candidature to Arun Gawli - then why cany BJP can give to Mrs Purohit
3.Sir we need to do more atcions than talks
4.Sometime i feel BJP is more simple in many policies but opponents always give a bad color. How to change that - Come to grass root. Now we are feared for our life due to 26/11 give us safety
5.Please appoint a Media chief and Election strategist like in USA (which worked well for Obama) we have lot of IIM graduates who can really take BJP to a strong strong position
All the best to you Sir. Hope our dreams will come true.

Dear Mr. Advani,
This is an excellent post. it is obvious that a person like you has to suffer a lot to reach at this stage. Your way to Prime Minister will not be easy one, most of the parties will try to resist a person like you. However, you have to go ahead. You have many enthusiastic and dedicated persons in your team.
I know well Mr. Girdharilal Bhargava, a very senior member of your brigade and six times consecutive MP from our constituency, Jaipur. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UChUu4QZgxU) No one could defeat him till date including Sawai Bhawani Singh, Maharaja of Jaipur. We are proud of him.

Perpetrators of Emergency - Rewarded by BJP ?
Respected Advaniji,
I read your blog, “FROM JAIL TO FREEDOM PARK” and my eyes had tears but also I was proud for my country and for people like you and many others including my uncle.
But having said and realised that, I feel ashamed, at times, for my party the BJP !!! How is it possible that this party can give a lok sabha nomination to someone who was actively involved in arresting, torturing and punishing innocent DESHBHAKTS during the darkest moment of Indian Democracy, the EMERGENCY.

I hail from Silchar, Assam. I have just viewed a news clip posted in one asamees news channel, suggesting that the Silchar seat has been given to one Ajit Bhattacharjee, a retired and disgraced police officer actually from Gwahati. He was forced to resign on several curroption charges. that apart during emergency he arrested, tortured and mutilated many of the intrepid anti-emergency workes at that time. To name a few instances, 1) Shri Motilal Jalan, a devote sangh swamsevak and today at his age of 75, he still distributes the panchjanya and the organisor to the state of Assam. Shri Jalan was picked up by this Ajit Bhattacharjee on a saturday and taken to the then remotely located kalapahar police station of Guahati. Ajit Bhattacharjee tortured Shri Jalan and left the rest of the torturous job for 4 of his subordinates.

We have committed mistakes in the past and are committing blunders in the present. Such people being entertained by the BJP will definately leave Advaniji heart to bleed on a confidence vote in the parliament.
Under the circumstances of 70% of the Indian voters being young, you should have considered a new face for Silchar.
Lets start hailing the emergency period !!!!!???

Dear Advaniji,
Since the general election for the 15th Lok Sabha has been announced, the political parties have little time left for planning and match the poll. I have been analysing the public mood and the equations that surfaced during every poll since the unprecedented election of 1977.
The Congress has run away with a grand and latest musical rhythm of JAI HO for its campaign. Its a real good move by them, the song relates to the poor having a future. To counter that, take your slogan to a new height which can involve every people of the country, and not dilute the very principle of your party. I suggest JAI RAM, SALAM RAHMAN would be an appropriate slogan. This slogan would surely compel the muslimfold to gaze at your party with interest, and help your allies to draw breath peacefully, and definitely charm the party cadre to clamour Ram’s name with no inhibition.

Dear Advani Ji,
Namaskar. Coming from a family of traditional Congress supporters in Haryana, we have decided to support BJP this time around because of a gradual realisation that India is under Jihadi attack-both within and without.
Just a couple of years ago, the Congress government in Haryana silently carved out a new Muslim-majority district called Mewat (just like the Kerala govt. carved out the Muslim majority district of Malappuram). For this unpardonable crime, all the students and youth (1st time voters) have decided to teach a lesson to the Congress this time.
The future of Haryana looks very bleak as the second partition of India is encouraged and executed by the Congress for vote bank politics.
Only the BJP can save India.

Honestly I don’t see active contribution from Mr Advani. If it was meant for just conversation between users we can as well have this in any other blog. The blog needs active contribution in the conversations section from Mr Advani. Just visiting here for starting new threads is not enough.
I would like to see how BJP will tackle Corruption and Terrorism. Can someone in BJP top level share their plan. What is the metrics they will use to measure the success or failure.
BJP top level agenda does not seem to be followed by their own CM. Look at Karnataka, we have 4-5 hours of power cut each day in the residential areas. But the CM is throwing away money at temples. I am not able to understand the logic.
March 5th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
I am a strong supporter of BJP and this time around want to see you as the next PM.
However the efforts being put in by the team looks inadequate. i was saddened by the statement of mr Arun jaitly during the program-A billion votes that NDA will not make it to the majority mark and would look forward to anti-congress party lending support.BJP should hold a training for all its spokepersons and direct them to speak in same voice and make such statements only once the voting is over.
This time around the focus should be winibility of the candidate. Here again SP and Congress seems a step ahead of us. SP seems to be targeting BJP by announcing strong candidates in places like gorakpur and lucknow the BJP strong holds.BJP should also hunt for winnable candidates and should field them in constituency that are either manageable or hard and not from safe seats. Also, i think BJP should focus on issues related to aam aadmi and should give less weightage to issues like terrerisom, afsal guru etc.
March 5th, 2009 at 4:14 pm
Sir,
We the supporters of BJP want deseparetly too see the Dynasty-controlled Congress out of power this time. But we are not sure whether BJP/NDA will really return to power.
Sir, please oblidge us that if by chance, BJP/NDA doesnt come into power, BJP should be ready to support any other combination to put congress out of power.
We should tell the nation that we can lead the coilations as well as support them. BJP MEANS STABILITY.

Dear Mr. Advani Ji
There is a need for change after 5 years of governance and the existing economy where in a common man who has invested his hard core tax saving investment like ELSS mutual funds are giving negative returns and the whole stock market crashed even when the global economy was in good shape just because of P-notes issue as raised by the Government. My investment of Rs.30000 3 years back is giving me 40% reduction in it’s face value only.
This time BJP is the only relief and you must get full majority to teach lesson on how to run the society
March 5th, 2009 at 8:17 pm
Dear Sri Advaniji,
I have great respect for your integrity, dedication, devotion, knowledge and experience. I believe that with the grace of god, you will lead India soon to its glory.
The reason I am writing this comment because I heard from some newspaper report that Sri Yediyurappa’s son will be given MP ticket from Karnataka. It very much disturbed me and many. I request you to kindly desist any such move at this juncture. It will send a wrong signal to the voters and they may be unhappy with the BJP. Besides, Congress will use this issue to mispropagate against BJP. Let his son wait for some more time and establish himself in the party.
If he gets ticket it will be “Gowda family verses Yediyurappa family” in Karnataka. Nobody wants this to happen.
I request again, kindly not to give ticket to Yediyurappa’s son at this time.
Thank you,
Kumar

Namaste Sir
I attended your rally in Bangalore, college made us go. Hot sun and compulsory. Most people not heard what you say, most people ate and had happy time. All friends say attendance should not be must, we had to go, was told by college to go. Waste of time, we thought, but we got to hear you say. I from UP, here in Bangalore, on study. Want to be software person. Work hard.
Now, dont like BJP in Kanannada state. They no like people from North. CM not nice man. Girls also troubled on road. You dont know real condition. Only local, local people liked here. Outsiders pushed away. You do something about this also Sir. Thank you Sir.

Advaniji
Great to see you in action on blogosphere. But would want this to be a sustainable affair and not just a pool plank.
Also this comment is for respected advaniji to read, rather than it remain on the blog and read by the IT guys who are helping the project.
You seem to be a good chronicler - the way you have narrated is good.
Also i have to raise these issues for you. Please don’t mind.
I think winning UP and Gujarat is going to be a very tough challenge for you. There is no point in being overconfident out here at both places. One where you are strong and the other where you are weak.
Your path to Delhi has to pass through these places.
Also even post winning there is no point being arrogant to party supporters & sangh parivar veterans. This has been a norm in the party since last 12 years, i have observed & seen this myself.(why i am saying this is that i believe your party is going to be a dark horse in these elections & going to win.)
so all the best for the d-day
March 6th, 2009 at 12:08 am
Sir,
In 1969 the National Congress Party was bifurcated into Congress (I) led by Mrs. Indira Gandhi and the other one Congress (O) led by Shri Nijalingappa. Accordingly, election commission changed the Cong (I) party symbol of National Congress Party from “Cow and calf” to Hand (Panja) for Congress (I).
Cong (I) for quite sometime used the name Cong (I), but subsequently and conveniently omitted the suffix (I) with a view to gain some political advantage.
A “Right to Knowledge” application to EC can clarify whether present day Congress party can pull on without the suffix (I).
NCP, TCP or Kerala Congress Party who came out from their parent party cannot and are not claiming them as Congress party. JD (U), JD (S), and RJD are not claiming as Janata Dal.
The Congress party is legally bound by EC to use the suffix (I), this will be a great setback to that party. At the same time opposition parties, particularly BJP can gain enormous political mileage out of it.

Dear Sir,
It’s great to see you travel across the span of India at this age when we youngsters do not even go to vote citing plethora of problems. I do really want the NDA to come to the power given your vision for the country. However, lately I believe BJP is facing a dearth of popular youth leaders. While Congress has Rahul Gandhi, Jyotiraditya Sindhia, Milind Deora, Sachin Pilot, Jitin Prasad who are looked upon as educated, modern youth icons - there’s NO ONE in BJP to look upto.
Probably the time has come to nurture youth to take up more responsibilities. Anyways, wish you & your party all the very best for the upcoming battle.

Abhijit

Advani ji,
jp has revolutionises whole nation to restore democracy during emergency. jp did everything to bring down congress government but internal war between morarji desai and charan singh bring country to the same hand from we wanted to move out.i always rate congree as a party ruled by dinesty and moved by the fuel of corruption, illusive plan,no foreign and internal policy.
Corruption grew and example is bofors and swiss bank case where we have 1.4 trillion doller black money.our share market falldown from 20,000 point to 9,000.economy dip,our growth rate paralysed.their internal policy and foreign policy failed, don’t declare war but do something but just after few days of mumbai attack pakistan got 138 missile from brazil, uno and japan is proposing 11.5 & 7 billion dollar help to pakistan .ulfa used to get khalida zia help.moist is ruling in nepal, naxalite reached half of nation, pakistans is on verge of being Taliban and our government is sleeping.
BEST OF LUCK.

India is a country of immense potential. Just that it’s caught between past and future.
Everyone knows the past - do we need to recall emergency or babri masjid demolition all the time. We can’t forget it - true, but can’t we live without raising the same questions every election.
Since Advaniji has taken this initiative - I would like to see read more about his thoughts on future of India - how he is going to manage economic slowdown, joblessness, terrorism, floods in Bihar, suicides in AP, regulations in corporate sector - list is limitless…
Let the nation know what agenda BJP has besides just winning over Congress.
Regards,
Anil

dear sir,
i am very happy to read your views in your blog. sir, in today’s political environment some parties follow the Parivarwad or Vanshwad. in past BJP didn’t show this. when i saw the list of candidates for upcoming general election of party, there are some new names and they belongs to the political back ground. i am total upset right now, because now BJP follows Parivarvad or Vanswad.
if this Parivarwad or Vanshwad will continue, then how common can survive in Politics?

Respected Shri Advaniji,
I am apalled at one of the comments posted against Shri Ajit Bhattacharjee from Silchar by a respondent to your beautiful piece on your trip down memory lane in Karnataka. I am from Silchar and have now been travelling all around the world for work and various assignments. I can assure you Shri Advaniji that if there is anyone in Silchar who can contest against the strong local Congress leadership, it is Shri Bhattacharjee. I am constantly in touch with the local youth in Silchar and I can sense the kind of confidence they have in Shri Bhattacharjee as the leader there to represent BJP…contd.
March 8th, 2009 at 11:28 am
In continuation to my previous comment…
The party indeed needs a change in leadership in Silchar, and if there is anyone who ably represents strength in character, integrity, passion and charisma, it is Shri Bhattacharjee. It is indeed very disturbing to learn that some people there do not want a strong leadership to emerge and therefore manufacture unwarranted and baseless things about him. People in Silchar have known him for years now and am sure all of them will vouch for him to represent BJP. This is indeed an opportunity for the party to win the seat there this time.
Hope you will look into the matter and not allow such conspirators to ruin BJP’s chances.
Warm regards, a concerned citizen of India

Advani ji,
With due regards i request you to consider one of my suggestion. My suggestion is, an archeological expert should be appointed to prove that RAMAYANA is not just a mythology , but a historical fact. This can be done by locating the various places RAMA covered before reaching LANKA, with some hard evidences. This will put to rest all the doubts raised about RAMAYANA.

Dear Sir,
I am Shouvick Dutta, Dean of The Indian Institue of Planning & Management, Mumbai. I read a comment of some Tusharsut about Mr. Ajit Kumar Bhattacharjee. Please allow me to clarify some points to your good self. I haven’t seen or heard anything about nomination for Silchar. But if it’s true, that is, if Mr. Ajit Bhattacharjee is nominated, the youth will be very motivated. As a person from Silchar and an ardent Silchar fan, I can tell you honestly that Mr. Ajit Bhattacharjee is the right candidate for the LS elections this time. This change of leadership, if it happens, will surely give BJP its well desrved seat. And only he can put up a big fight against Mr. Santosh Dev. And let this person, Tusharsut, whoever he is, keep creating whatever rumour he wants to. We know Mr. Ajit Bhattacharjee too well and we all know what a committed and dedicated person he is.
Regards..
March 8th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
Dear Sir,
Just to add another point…I think it’s about time that we see a dynamic person as a leader from BJP in Silchar. And if Mr. Ajit Bhattacharjee is nominated, I will garner enough support of the youth to put up the biggest fight ever against the contesting opposition there. I will appeal to all from Silchar to please take this resolve to bring about a change in Silchar. It’s about time! And please don’t give in to these pervert thoughts who create conspiracy for their ulterior motives.
Regards,
Shouvick Dutta

Most Respected Shri Advaniji,
Namaskar! Loved reading your informative and nostalgic piece about emergency. It was also indeed very nice to know about Bajpayeeji’s culinary skills.
Just wanted to bring something to your kind attention. I just heard from my colleague and dear friend, Shouvick Dutta, that someone has posted a comment against Shri Ajit Kr. Bhattacharjee from Silchar. In fact, Advaniji, he is known by one and all in Silchar as the most dynamic and fearless leader who can bring about a great change in the now ever deteroriating conditions there because of a failed leadership by the Congress. And we all want BJP to bring about that change. We will all get great support from the youth in Silchar for the elections this time. We will take personal responsibility for that.
Look forward to seeing BJP taking our country forward.
Warm regards,
Shubho Shekhar Bhattacharjee

Dear Advaniji
Here is someone who really wantes to see you as next Prime Minister of india, and sometime i really feel bad when a senior leader like you is speaking in lok sabha few leaders blessed from high command of oppostion are chewing gums rather hearing you attentatevly, this shows the condition of few young people becoming ministers and acting like as if nothing is above them.
presently india needs someone who cares for poor people, who believes in making india shines morally and this can be possible only under your leadeship
March 8th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
One of my friends is doing a personal campaigns to spread the word among the youth to exercise the vote first…
Please spread the word - that Indians need to vote for stronger governance - i.e. A BJP lead government

Dear Advani ji,
Freedom in India is a strange mix of facts and fiction. There are people who are still counted as ‘beasts’. In many a commentary on Vedanta Sutras it is affirmed that the aim of human life is to seek enlightenment by the meditation of Vedas. A man not doing so should be considered wasting a golden opportunity. However those who are Shuras are not to meditate on Vedas. Why so?
The logic is that they are not human beings. In stamping Shuras as ‘beasts’ and hence not worthy of Vedic study is one of the greatest deception of Indian Culture. An instance where a basic freedom guaranteed by Veda itself is mendaciously taken away.
We would like to hear your opinion on this in your future posts, because herein lies a truth which should be understood by all emancipators of the Indian mind.
Warmest regards
THK

Naveen Patnaiks betryal is regrettable, but he has not learnt lessons from KUMARASWAMY from KARNATAKA.if BJP could project a PRO POOR mainfesto,a simple and pro poor young leader .BJP can do a KARNATAKA in ORRISSA,The ARCH-BISHOPS appreciation will not fetch votes for BJD instead it will boomerang on PATNAIK with the majority population in ORRISA UNDERSATNDING the image building exercise by PATNAIK and the THREAT of NAXALISM will only dirve him far from people due to his association with the RED BRIGADE
ALL IS NOT LOST FOR NDA,IF WE WIN 90% of seats in BJP ruled states ,NO ONE CAN STOP YOU FROM BECOMING THE PRIME MINSITER OF THIS COUNTRY ……

Can you somehow manage to become PM this time and save our country??
All my friends are saying that NDA may not form govt this time. I am really worried.

It is good that a person who hopes to be the Prime Minister of our country in the near future has a good presence on the web. When will you be uploading a detailed manifesto or programme for governance so that people can vote based on what you plan for the future, not what your interpretation of the past is? All the best for the elections…

Management has become a part and parcel of everyday life, be it at home, in the office or factory and in Government. In all organizations, where a group of human beings assemble for a common purpose irrespective of caste, creed, and religion, management principles come into play through the management of resources, finance and planning, priorities, policies and practice. Management is a systematic way of carrying out activities in any field of human effort. Management need to focus more on leadership skills, e.g., establishing vision and goals, communicating the vision and goals, and guiding others to accomplish them.
Its task is to make people capable of joint performance, to make their weaknesses irrelevant, says the election Management Guru Obama.

Dear Shri Advaniji,
I have a simple suggestion for the upcoming election campaign. I would like you to keep the punchline as - It’s Time for a Change.
Everyone is aware how the Congress has taken the country backwards in the last 5 years. The youth of today need to be reminded of this and goaded to go out and vote for a change. This simple message will urge them to do so. I hope you find my suggestion useful.
Thanking you,
Best Regards.

respected sir
i am an 18 year old girl from karnataka…i have started taking interest in politcs…but more importantly right now i want to express my opinion on the mangalore attacks… its very sad to see that the goons are still at large…though we have all seen what has happened to the girls on tv its strange that nothing is being done about it…sir, dont you think strong action needs to be taken.?…seeing the publicity that the rama sene got , the number of moral policing cases have gone up…its very unsafe to even walk on the roads….we all talk about democracy and free india…but unfortunately that does not seem to be happeneing…wat should be done sir? i think every women deserves respect …she should not be discriminated on the basis of what she wears and how she chooses to lead her life…its very unfortunate…
March 13th, 2009 at 8:16 pm
I would prefer Manmohan singh to be the prime minister and most of the youths will also thinks the same i stongly beleive that Manmohan singh will be the prime minister again, and now the third front which is wasting time and getting all wrong attention from the ppl, and the desperate Mayawathi, on a whole the congress is acting matured and living upto the standards though i have never voted to congress i will this time, Sir this is not to rage against you its high time you realise that the youth of this country is not expecting a communal leader, the karnataka govt had so much of weak administration that the mangalore attack was taken so lightly

Hi, I am a normal people of Ahmedabad, GUJARAT who doesnt have a policts knowledge even I dont have a Election Card yet because I dont need it I am 27 years old. I have seen a leader of leader that is one and only NARENDRABHAI MODI (I am a great fan of Narendra Modi). He had made such a brilliant efforts to Gujarat especially Ahmedabad.
March 14th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
Respected sir,I am great follower of you.I really supported your movement of joining youth in politics.I’m really humble that you have spare the time for this.Sir but i want to tell a thing, sir we always vote for a party in broader term but we will also consider the candidates which the party placed in the constituency,if our representatives is not good and bold ,on whom we can believe that he can win the election and can raise our voices. Then how i can vote him even he is from BJP.Sir the same case is with our constituency shravasti ,where the party has given the ticket to very weak candidate, who has no attraction.Sir dont take me wrong i do not belong to any political group, i just want that a strong government should formed that take our country ahead.I humbly request you to rethink about the candidate.I just want my constituency to be at greater heights.Sir this is mass fealing, i’m just a communicator.Because many of us dont use the computer there.

It was interesting to read about your thoughts during the inauguration of the Freedom Park. It brought us closer to a leader about whom we only read and hear making political comments. All through the write up, the clarity of thought on Freedom was never missed. Hopefully, such clarity of thought will take the Vijay Sankalp rally to its fruitful end.

March 15th, 2009 at 11:39 am

Dear Advani Ji,
i am a big fan of yours, and sincerly wants you to lead India, but we have to think about the people who are not voting in this country, why we have voting percentage so low, why as high as 50% of voters are not voting, untill we search answers for these question, we cant make change,
all the best sir,
thanks,
Naveen Kumar
March 15th, 2009 at 11:50 am
There have been two instances of muslim rioting in up and bihar in last weeks when muslim crimainals were gunned down by police the supporters of these criminals at the behest of vinod dua and karan thapar branded secular parties hit back and blazed down police posts and beated up police man.
Do those police man have no human rights or these parties want to make a situation where a police man fears acting against any muslim even if he knows he is a criminal.
The following maintained there silence
1.testaa setal wad –does she run on congess money.
2. mallika sarbhai- on whose money does she dance.
3. prabhat joshi,Mahesh bhatt,amair khan,nandita das
I openly challenge them to reply to these points.
No doubts vehicle thefts are on the rise due to these people and police is being made helpless by these secular parties and all those who vote for tham.
March 15th, 2009 at 11:53 am
NHRC also didnot come forward to save the policeman
do police man who kill muslim criminals have no human rights.
do hindus have any human rights in india

Amazing narration. It is fascinating to learn that we are being told first hand account of how Democracy was attempted to be murdered completely by one over ambitious and incompetant lady in 70s. Same may be attempted if we Indians don’t remain alert. Current leadership in Congress is equally incomptant and yet over ambitious… This combination gives rise to dangerous tendencies… and disastrous results.. Same can be seen in Pakistan today…
May 2009 is golden chance to keep India away from such families!!

March 19th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Respected Sir,
I dont know if you are reading all our comments here, but still I wanted to tell few things to you.
There are key issues in the country which are challenging now, poverty, economic incertainity, threat to peace, threat to personal rights etc. So far the most ‘posh’ leadership of BJP hasnt come up with the agenda when we have only weeks away from the poll, having settled with alliances much ahead of UPA, what is making you so long to come out with a detailed agenda and show it to us. You have a great challenge ahead of you in leading the nation, are you ready, have you planned for it. We cannot vote to just to throw a bad government away, we want to ensure that we are voting the right PM atleast now. Please comeout with plans on how you will tackle key issues like regional stability, internal security, empowering economy, healthcare, poverty and social issues.
- Joe
March 20th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
Advaniji;
On the outset let me wish you good luck on your journey to be the next PM of the country.Let me tell you that me (am a doctoral student) and my family are staunch supporters of BJP for the very reason that it has educated people who can do wonders in running the nation if given a chance. NDA did that in many fronts but unfortunately its journey was cut short.
I would like to pose a question to you - this blog site is really wonderful. Nice to see a prospective PM trying to reach out to people personally. But will this idea sharing continue after election irrespective of the result? Advanaji we need leaders (WE DO NEED!) whom we can reach out to. May not be in person but at least personally. Its time the guys out there claiming for my vote become accessible after elections.
Good luck to you Sir and I seriously hope and pray that NDA comes to power.
March 23rd, 2009 at 3:08 pm
Mr Rohitgupta… what bhavana and kumarnagen are talking about is attack on women.. what the hell this got to do with churches. It is disapponting that a party like BJP having such aspirant leadership and displined party structure is STILL not able to sacrifice the gunda organisations’ friendship just for votes. If BJP had banned sri ram sene for the attrocities they did at mangalore bjp would have won millions of votes, by not doing that BJP has accepted and endorsed the ideology of sri ram sene. This is very dangerous a high profile political party like BJP, for no reason, is feared of banning a non sense organisation like sri ram sene. BJP’s name is spoiling day by day, BJP and Advaniji has to act quick to regain the image. Acts against women are not tolerated by any civilzation let it be urban or rural, the party not taking proper measure to stop it will suffer in the elections.

Respected Advaniji,
i am a very small fan of B.J.P.,Hindusm, You and Modiji, A SIMPLE STRACHGY TO WIN , I SEE IS TO BRING ALL THIS FOUR THINKS TOGETHER(B.J.P.,Hindusm, You and Modiji),I KNOW IT IS DIFFICULT BCOS PARTY IS BEFORE INDIVITUAL BUT MR. MODI IS A MAN FOR PARTY, IN HIS OWN STYLE, KEEP THE EGO A SIDE, WHAT CONGRESS AND OTHER PARTY ARE DOING TODAY IS THEY WANT TO KEEP MODIJI AWAY FROM CENTRAL ELECTION,, SO THROUGH MEDIA OR SUCH THEY SAYS MODIJI IS A HITLER, OR MIDIJI CONSIDER HIMSELF BEFORE PARTY, TRY AND UNDERSTAND COUNTRY TODAY NEEDS ONLY THREE LEADERS (BALA SAHEB, L.K. ADVANI & MODI ) , MAKE MODI A CAMPAIN HERO AND SEE THE DIFFERANCE, REST IS UP TO U AS U ARE THE DISSITION MAKER
March 28th, 2009 at 11:29 am
Dear Mr. Advani,
Can you pls answer below Quote/unquote from Ms. Kiran Bedi’s blog which are really a good pointer for BJP to address :
This is how it can to begin with:
First, find out if providing sound policing service is high on the political agenda of the political class. If yes, in what manner is it? What is their plan of action? And who are the persons entrusted with the task of putting it in place. And how? Are they willing to deliver it? Or they themselves are obstructing it? (I have seen many of this kind but not known to the people at large).
Thanks
Janak
March 28th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
Mr Advani,
You are aspiring to be next PM of India but can you tell us your top 10 achievements throughout your political carrier? Hope you will not consider Babri masjid demolition as your achievement.
People dont need violence and hatred against any community then why do you talk abt such matters and raise these issues during elections. Whu do you feel that your party’s ethics should be every citizen’s ethics? From the bottom of your heart you know that Mr Varun has used unsocial dialogues in public but you are still not ready to accept it. You have been a freedom fighter then how come you and other responsible leaders from all parties enjoy such cheap politics? For God’s sake lets talk on ground issues which every citizen of India including you is facing on daily basis.
There are more impotant issues than Ram and Allah
Lets talk abt your vision for India till 2014, employment, infrastructure , security etc.
March 29th, 2009 at 5:23 pm
Shri Advaniji…
why the current goverment is failed to hang up terrorist Afhzal Guru!!.
I think Varun Ghandhi has said right things, but our people still not recoginze message behind it. what’s u r opinion about this issue?
March 30th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
Sir,
As you have traveled most parts of country, i suppose you must have seen education condition and levels in different part of india, there are many levels of education, education in villages, tehsils, district, and metros. apart from these there are many levels of education at this places among a rich and poor. but poor cant get education which can lift there chance of being selected in good technical institutes. education level in government school are now became area of concern.
why don’t you and your party could please comes up with an idea which can provide same level of education, and competition among each and every children of india. as we all know children called pillars of tomorrows india.
Instead of providing reservation government should provide equal oppartunity for all student so that they can face same level of competition
“In the hope of better, prosperous india which could have same opportunity and competition among there children”
Thanks

Advaniji ,It was really heartening to learn how BJP has fought to save the democracy which Congress held at ransom. They claim of secular credentials where they cannot maintain the simple vision of founding fathers to keep India a democratic nation
I hope the lotus rises high in national spectrum and people of India(esp in my state of Orissa)vote you to power and show their thumbs down to the opportunistic and betrayal politics of our regional parties

Hi Sir,
I die hard follower of BJP and leadres like you Mr, Vajpaye, Mr, Mdo, Ms, Shushma Swaraj and many, I strongly know BJP is the only party which exist for bright future of India, please highlight following points in your election comp”.
Muslim Presedent of India Elcted by only BJP:
Credit cards for KISAN introduced by BJP:
recongnized INDIAN potential/strenghts and worked on it rather than going behind US or UN.
Build roads highways and has dream of conecting India and developing intrastructure:

Respected Advaniji,
In Maharashra the grave problem of the masses is frequent power cuts. It’s a head ache for the ones those live in cities. The present government is taen as the culprit for this.
Please consider this as your polotical issue.
April 11th, 2009 at 11:50 am
Dear Sir,
It was a great experience to go through your experience during emergency period and feel proud to know how people fighted for democracy. It shows how India stands as unchallenged democracy supremo in the world.
Your writing makes the reader get involved in it deeply and one should appreciate your writing skills. Sir, when I was reading through your “From Jail to Freedom Park” article, I found one mistake in the dates in one of the paragraphs. Here it is.. -
‘They can steal your freedom, but can’t take away your hope’
I entered the jail on the morning of 26 January 1977. I was released on 18 January 1977.
Sir, here the dates mentioned doesn’t seem to be logical as you said you were under 19 months imprisonment earlier.
I am a great follower of our country’s fundamental culture and I respect the vision of BJP very much. My request to reconsider the date in your article.
Thanks and wish you all the best for your future endeavors. The whole nation is with you sir.
April 11th, 2009 at 7:54 pm
Sir,
The last few days have highlighted one more point to make
the 1984 sikh roits were perpetrated by congress but still no organisation has opped the visa of any one from gandhi family or congress.
but visa to narendra modi is opposed which clearly indicates it is politically motivated.

Sir, i just want to say that many of people are working away from their native city/town. how can they vote? as you are a national leader, should do something like online voting so that each indian can vote. sir do you know that majority of votebank of bjp do not vote. voting process should be easy and accessable. waiting for your reply.

Advani ji,
You must have got the PM ship long long ago. You have increased the BJP strength in Lok Sabha.
The problem is the mind-set of the people. They deprived themselves.
You delivered a list of most wanted to Mia Musharraff and next govt could not c hange it.
You have to unite many to gain Parliamentary counts.
Power is most important in the eyes of MK gandhi to transform the things, power Baba Ramdeo created in his own ways. Find out a way for You.
Bring swiss money. Say from Lalqila the men are equal. Say that U want to serve as PM for 3 years only and not for 5 years. Your foes in your party will wait till that time. Next phir likhenge
