The Sufi Path

24

dargah-shariffClassical Sufi scholars have defined Sufism as “a science whose objective is the reparation of the heart and turning it away from all else but God.” Sufism refers to a group of mystical Muslim movements. It uses music, dancing and other means to reach a state of communion with God.

It is analogous in some senses to the Bhakti movement in Hinduism and to the various Christian monastic movements such as that of St Francis of Assisi. The Sufi path consists in cleansing the heart from whatever is other than Allah.

A Persian poem tells us what The Sufi Path (Tasawwuf ) is:

What is Tasawwuf? Good character and awareness of God.
ThatтАЩs all Tasawwuf is. And nothing more.

What is Tasawwuf? Love and affection.
It is the cure for hatred and vengeance. And nothing more.

What is Tasawwuf? The heart attaining tranquilityтАУ
which is the root of religion. And nothing more.

What is Tasawwuf? Concentrating your mind,
which is the religion of Ahmad (pbuh). And nothing more.

What is Tasawwuf? Contemplation that travels to the Divine throne.
It is a far-seeing gaze. And nothing more.

Tasawwuf is keeping oneтАЩs distance from imagination and supposition.
Tasawwuf is found in certainty. And nothing more.

Surrendering oneтАЩs soul to the care of the inviolability of religion;
this is Tasawwuf. And nothing more.

Tasawwuf is the path of faith and affirmation of unity;
this is the incorruptible religion. And nothing more.

Tasawwuf is the smooth and illuminated path.
It is the way to the most exalted paradise. And nothing more.

I have heard that the ecstasy of the wearers of wool
comes from finding the taste of religion. And nothing more.

India is known for its long and widely revered tradition of Sufi saints. Amongst them is Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti of Ajmer (popularly known as Khwaja Gharib Nawaz). Some excerpts from Shri L.K. AdvaniтАЩs autobiography, My Country My Life:

Let me reiterate that I cherish the fact that India is a multi-religious country in which both our Constitution and our age-old culture brook no discrimination on the grounds of faith. Muslims and Christians have the same rights, responsibilities and opportunities as others. I greatly admire the weighty contribution that they have made to enrich many facets of our national life. I hold all faiths to be worthy of respect. Let me cite an example here. When I reached Ajmer in Rajasthan during the course of my Bharat Suraksha Yatra in 2006, my party colleagues suggested that I should visit Pushkar, a sacred Hindu shrine by the side of a lake which is believed to have been created by Lord Brahma himself. I readily agreed. But I said I would also like to offer prayers at the Dargah Sharif of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, a revered Sufi saint, in Ajmer.* Although a few eyebrows were raised, I nonetheless visited both the holy places.

The concept of тАШCultural NationalismтАЩ enjoins upon the adherents of different faiths in India to respect, and take pride in, the common unifying culture of our ancient land while celebrating its many diversities; not to have extra-territorial loyalty; not to denigrate other faiths as false or inferior, but rather to learn from the best that each faith has to offer. It means nothing more, nothing less.

* Footnote: Here is a report about my earlier visit to the Ajmer Dargah in 2000. тАШHome Minister L.K. Advani on Sunday prayed at Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin ChishtiтАЩs dargah here. The local Muslims were ecstatic and thronged the dargah in huge numbers to watch the spectacle. There was a popular request from the crowd: Give a little speech. Advani readily obliged. He said: тАЬIndia is a multi-religious country and people belonging to all faiths strive to be good people. That is why every community comes to this dargah. Let us be good human beings first. It does not matter if one believes in Ishwar or Allah.тАЭ He said although the twentieth century was identified with the Western world, тАЬif all communities here worked hard unitedly, then the twenty-first century will certainly belong to Bharat.тАЭ To this the crowds responded with тАЬAameenтАЭ. (So be it).тАЩ (тАШA surprise: Advani prays at Ajmer dargahтАЩ; The Times of India; 4 December 2000) Later, when a journalist asked me whether my visit to the dargah was part of a larger image changing exercise, I replied, тАШMy perceptions have always been clear. I am saying the same things now what I said twenty-five years ago.тАЩ

we will wait for a day when the world looks an individual first and the religion next.

  2. cmpershad Says:

We are a country who imbibed sufism in our lifestyle and are liberal in our outlook. It is the politicians who in the name of secularism have ingrained communalism in our thinking. And now we are facing a threat to our secular fabric from these so-called secularists!!

  3. IMZ Says:

One of the Hindu weaknesses is never clearly seeing through enemies/potential enemies.

Sufi islam, which is tom tommed as moderate islam has hardly benign track record.

It is not just Sufi Mohummad of Swat, who is a rogue Sufi. India has a history of Sufi fanatics like naqshbandi monster ahmed Sirhindi.

Please watch the attached video to get a greater understanding of sufi islam.

Challenges that native Indian cultures face is serious. Institutionalised support is necessary. It is native Indian population proportion that has been coming down on account of offensive actions by predatory totalitarian imperial faiths.

To protect indigenous beliefs, A National Native Indian People Commission should be set up by BJP should it get a chance.

  4. britsin Says:

Who, after reading LKA’s article on his Ajmer Dargah visit and on St. Francis of Assisi, coupled with the magnanimity of appreciating other religions and the frankness to admit a right in the wrong (view on Jinnah while in Pakistan), will still hold the view that LKA is communal, biased and excluding?

The more I read about the man and his life, the more I’m convinced about the secular credentials of Hindutva.

And, when the only ’seemingly’ valid point (that he and his Hindutva is communal) against LKA by other political parties turns out a propaganda, then why shouldn’t I or anyone else vote for him? Me and my father is voting for BJP these elections.

  5. nacram Says:

That was a heart warming story. Kabir das was a great ram bhakt as well. So was Raas khan. In the Vishnu Temple of srirangam in tamil nadu, a special festival is organised for thuluka nachiyar, a muslim princess, who was a devotee of vishnu. The princess happened to be the daughter of a muslim sultan. We also have the example of Vavar Swami a muslim devotee of lord ayappa. The golden plating of the palani murugan temple was infact laid by a muslim family.

    Dear Advaniji,

The teachings of Sufism and Vedanta are one.

Mr Advaniji.I am a hardcore BJP supporter and unlike 2days political world, i dont quite believe in switching loyalties.so ill continue being a BJP supporter till it sticks 2 its ideology.now i am young and educated and tats y get 2 frustrated ven parties talk of secularism and practice pseudo-secularism.but i kind of get crazy ven d party i ideolize does d same.one of the primary objectives of BJP happens to be 2 fight 4 hindutva which is becoming a mass movement and gathering momentum day by day.But then you blog and say tat u speak of secularism in a dargah.i vud hav appreciated d “iron man” in you sir,had u spoken on a ban on cow slaughtering and mandatory recitation of vande maatram.i know well sir tat u hav mellowed down ,for, necessity is d mother of all inventions.you hav 2 b polite and a moderate person if you wish 2 b a prime minister which i sincerely pray ull be;but as a genuine supporter of BJP ill
always critisise d party if does exactly against vat it preaches

  8. R.Alamsha Karnan Says:

Had Karnan, the great warrior and hero of Mahabharata, been a Brahman….? - Part1

    Karnan’s struggle against caste:

    1. Karnan’s birth story and lineage was kept as a secret and was not revealed to him till the end. He was born accidentally to an unmarried virgin mother Kunti, gifted by the son God Surya, when she tried to test the boon granted to her by sage Durvasa. Kunti did not want to face the world as an unmarried mother and abandoned Karnan, setting him afloat in a box in a river.

    2. The child Karnan was picked up from the river water by Adhiratha, who was the charioteer of King Dhritarashtra. As Karnan grew up, he decided to be a warrior. Karnan approached Dronacharya who was the trainer of Kuru princes. But Drona refused Karnan, as he was of low caste, a Sutaputra or the son of a charioteer. Drona even made Ekalavya give up his thumb as guru-dakshina so that there would be no threat to Arjun’s status as the ultimate warrior.

  9. R.Alamsha Karnan Says:

Had Karnan, the great warrior and hero of Mahabharata, been a BrahmanтАж.? - Part2

    3. Karnan sensed that his caste would be a barrier in his quest for knowledge. Karnan decided to approach Parashurama, who taught the Brahmans alone. Karnan lied to Parashuram that he was a Brahmin and was accepted as his student. Karnan was an efficient and diligent student. Parashurama trained Karnan and declared that he was equal to his guru in the art of warfare.

    4. Later, Parashurama finds that Karnan had bluffed that he was a Brahman and curses Karnan that when he would require an Astra (weapon) the most, he would forget it.

  10. R.Alamsha Karnan Says:

Had Karnan, the great warrior and hero of Mahabharata, been a BrahmanтАж.? - Part3

    5. Dronacharya arranged a tournament to display the skills of Kuru princes. Arjuna was the chief attraction of the tournament as a gifted archer. Karnan then appeared in the scene, successfully matched all the skills of Arjuna and then challenged him in the duel. However Karnan was refused to perform the duel as he was asked to introduce him by Kripacharya and was said that only a prince could challenge another prince. Then, Duryodhana, the eldest of Kauravas, offers Karna the throne of Anga so that he became a king and could be eligible to duel his cousins. Karnan was emotionally stirred at this incident. He asked Duryodhana how he could repay him, Duryodhana told him that he only wanted his friendship. Karna had already given him his heart.

This is where everything goes wrong….

  11. R.Alamsha Karnan Says:

Had Karnan, the great warrior and hero of Mahabharata, been a BrahmanтАж.? - Part4

Varnashram Dharma - By RK Lakhi Kant:

Those who adhere to the principles of the Varnashram system of living are considered to be human beings whereas those who neglect it are considered to be only living at a sub-human level by the Vedas.

In short, Varnashram means the four occupational classes of society and the four spiritual orders, viz. Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaisya and Sudra.

The Brahmanas are the intellectual class, the Kshatriyas the administrative class, the Vaishyas the farming and trading class and the Sudras the labourer class who shall serve the other three higher classes.

  12. R.Alamsha Karnan Says:

Had Karnan, the great warrior and hero of Mahabharata, been a BrahmanтАж.? - Part5

Had Karnan been brought up by a Brahman….?:

Eventhough Karnan was much superior than Arjun, he was destined to loose the war basically because of his inferior caste. Does it mean, Karnan tried to break the code of Varnashram Dharma by aspiring to become a warrior, a profession reserved for Kshatriyas, instead of following his family profession of a charioteer?.

Had Karnan been brought up by a Brahman Instead of a charioteer, a low caste, what would have been the verdict of Mahabharata?.

One has to be born and can NOT be adopted or converted into a Brahman/Kshatriya/Vaisya caste. A casteless Hindu is another Shudra without SC/ST benefits by default. If GOI removes the lid called SC/ST reservation, the Shudra genie will come out. This is the basis for psedo-secularism.

  13. R.Alamsha Karnan Says:

I want to become a BrahminтАж: Part 3

Turning the left cheek when someone slaps you on right, does not put you on equal platform. Rather, it further pushes you down. He will continue to hit you left, right and centre. Insult for insult. The first step towards equality.

As i have repeated several times, Islam and Hinduism acts like a mirror for each other to see their ugly face. You have shown us the mirror and definitely it has brought some good sense in the minds of Indian Muslims. Now it’s our turn to return the favour.

BTW, had Karnan been brought up by a Brahman Instead of a charioteer, a low caste, what would have been the verdict of Mahabharata?.

    http://alamsha.sulekha.com/blog/post/2009/05/had-karnan-the-great-warrior-and-hero-of-mahabharata.htm

Let us talk. Very soon, we will become equals.

  14. R.Alamsha Karnan Says:

Why i want to become a BrahminтАж: Part 1

    Hard facts:

    1. It’s impossible for Indian Muslims to delink themselves from Pakistan factor 100%, howsoever loud they may scream. Majority is NOT willing to buy the Muslim patriotism and loyalty stories. A deep suspicion exists. If i were a Hindu, i will do the same.

    2. The ghost of 1947 partition will always haunt Indian Muslims. Just impossible to escape.

    3. Insulting Islam and criticising Muslims will be perceived as nationalism whereas crticising Hinduism will always be perceived as anti-nationalism, especilly, if it comes from a Muslim. Again, if i were a Hindu, i will do the same.

    4. Pakistan is the ultimate benchmark for all evils. Unless Pakistan, the land of the pure, purifies from all the evils and gets the good conduct certificate from India, India can NOT move an inch forward and get out of the Pakistan obsession factor.

  15. R.Alamsha Karnan Says:

Why i want to become a BrahminтАж: Part 2

    5. If anything goes wrong between India and Pakistan, all fingers will unconsciously point towards Indian Muslims and Muslims will jump into the “I love my India, I am a patriot, I hate Pakistan” chest beating mode. Pathetic, but can’t help it.

    6. Finally, neither Islam, Hindu, Muslim, Pakistan and India will change. Nothing will change.

I live under constant fear and threat in my own homeland because i am a Muslim. I do not have the strength either to change Islam or Muslims. Neither a single Muslim among the 250 million can standup for my. At best they will watch as silent spectators. I have lost my faith in my community and pseudo-secular constitution.

  16. R.Alamsha Karnan Says:

Let there be a “Dharmayuddham” on Pakistan:

India has the right to excercise Dhramayuddham on Pakistan:

Unprincipled, unethical, unscrupulous, corrupt, dishonorable, fraudulent, disreputable, immoral, disgraceful, outrageous, shocking, appalling, wicked and sinful are the actions of the Kuru princes. Their unrighteousness had crossed all boundaries and limits. It was precisely to put an end to their insolent ambitions and to establish righteousness that Lord Krishna says:

“Whenever there is decay of righteousness
And the land of Bharata is steeped in shame,
And a rise of unrighteousness prevails
    Then I manifest Myself!
For the protection of the good
For the destruction of the wicked,
    For the establishment of Righteousness
I am born in age after age!”

Let the truth prevail. Let there be another Dharmayuddham.

  17. Shahzad Says:

Advani Ji…this kind of wisdom can only come from a Patrician. Bravo!

The fact is that Sufism and Advaita Hinduism is one and the same. I pray that Pakistan and India become one again.

  18. Naushad Says:

Bismillahir Rahmannir Raheem ~ In the Name of Allah Almighty, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

    Dear Sister Um Abdullah,

    Assalamu’alaikum, Namastee, Shalom and Greetings.

I am a Syed Muslim male from Pune, India. Over the years God or Allah the Most High has made me to have major experiences which are directly connected connected to the Kalki Avatar as the world savior.

Based on my personal understanding of the esoteric meanings of these experiences, I am pasting below an article along with copy of the email I received in response to these experiences.

    With love and blessings,

    Brother Naushad Somji.

  19. Naushad Says:

    Kalki Avatar:

In 1997 when I was 30, Hadrat Imam Ali (as) appeared to me in resurrected form at the Holy Shrine of Hazrat Khwaja Muinuddin Chisty (ra) at Ajmershareef. He looked into my eyes, smiled and went away. This opened my heart and my spiritual journey began. I started to isolate myself from people and my personality changed completely. Thereafter I experienced the divine knowledge of Allah gradually entering my heart and soul and I became very religious.

Since then I have been meeting many dead Islamic Saints or Auliyas including Prophet Muhammad (saw) who have also appeared to me in their resurrected forms. They initially made me thier murred or desciple and later on gave me khilafaat. This could be connected to the awaited Mahdi.

“The promised Mahdi will be among my family. God will make the provisions for his emergence within a single night “тАжтАж (Islam. Ibn Majah, Sahih, Vol. 2, P. 519)

  20. Naushad Says:

Later on I got baptized by a Christian Priest and during this the Priest saw a bright light descending on my person and then entering my soul as a small flame of light. Even I felt something powerful entering my heart that time. Then the Priest had a vision of Jesus Christ standing in Jordon River being baptised instead of me. This could be connected the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

тАЬWhat would be your situation if the Son of Mary (Jesus) descends upon you and your Imam (Mahdi) is from among youтАЭ? тАжтАжтАж..(Islam. Bukhari, kitabul-Anbiya, Chapter Nuzul Isa bin Maryam)

  21. Naushad Says:

Two years ago I suddenly got a pull to visit the Holy Shrine of Hadrat Shirdi Sai Baba (rh). Since then Baba has been guiding and protecting me and he calls me his son. During one such visit at the Temple of Hadrat Shirdi Sai Baba (rh) I saw a white ball of light approaching me from the right side during night aarti. When the aarti ritual was over, this white ball of light moved away. Recently Baba has informed me that this ball has been put into my heart by him and because of this over the period of time I will become spiritually one with God the Most High ~ an Avatar !!

This could be connected to the Kalki Avatar.

“Whenever the Law declines and the purpose of life is forgotten, I manifest myself on earth. I am born in every age to protect the good, to destroy evil, and to reestablish the Law” … (Hinduism. Bhagavad-Gita 4.7-8.)

  22. Naushad Says:

All these 3 powers ~ Mahdi, Messiah and Kalki Avatar combined make up the world savior. This world savior is destined to save the mankind from the rigors of today. Such a one fully prepared and powered to address the ills of today head-on and shall annihilate the ills of today and make the humanity step forward towards a new golden era… the Satyuga ~ the golden period. He shall be one who makes dharma or pure religion prevail over numerous other corrupted religions followed world-wide. One who brings all countries on a common platform… can only be the deliverer! The society as of today awaits the coming of this world savior! Call him the Messiah of the masses or the downtrodden denizens of the society… coming of him would be a boon to the mankind at large!

    Dear Brother Naushad Somji,

Thanks for your kind mail. Certainly you are a blessed soul. Strange are the ways of the Almighty and He alone knows about His scheme of things. Nothing is impossible for Him to do. Yes He can make a person a Messiah in one night as He did with the Prophet. It appears that the God Almighty has chosen you for some special work. The mystery would unfold in due course. I pray that you prove His worthy instrument. It also appears to me that you should pray “Thy Will Be Done”. I am sure He would reveal His Will and lead you to the work for which He has so kindly chosen you. My prayers for you. May the Great Masters help you in your mission?

    With Kind Regards,

    Sufi Brother

I am a Syed Muslim male from Pune, India. Over the years God or Allah the Most High has made me to have major experiences which are directly connected connected to the Kalki Avatar as the world savior. Based on my personal understanding of the esoteric meanings of these experiences, I am pasting above an article along with copy of the email I received in response to these experiences.

    With love and blessings,

    Brother Naushad Somji.
